Introduction to Using Herbs for Health If you’ve ever used herbs to keep yourself healthy or for treating a particular condition, then you will have experienced how powerful they are. Maybe the results weren’t what you were looking for, maybe you used the wrong herbs for your particular purpose. Maybe you are confused or uncertain about how to use herbs. Herbs are powerful plant medicines that need to be respected and used properly to get the right results. Following is a list of some FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about using herbs for health, with links to articles, audios and videos. We will also have a herb of the month that will detail that plant’s specific healing properties and any contraindications. NOTE: We are not doctors so we do not advise about a specific health issue. This section will help empower you to make the right choices for your health. There are so many herbal products and it’s confusing - How do I choose the right one? The first step is to narrow it down to what you need for your specific concern. Do you have an acute or chronic condition you wish to address? Do you wish to prevent or maintain good health? When you have narrowed it to your particular concerns, then you need to look for the herbal product or formula that will best address that. It is a good idea to find a company with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to ensure herbs are lab tested. Ask friends, search online and ask in your local health food store. Cross reference your sources to find a reputable company you are comfortable with. What are the best herbs to use for maintaining good health? The herbs that help maintain good health are herbs that are good at boosting the immune system. These are herbs like astragalus and ginseng. Astragalus boosts the immune system and can be used as a long-term preventive and restorative herb, both to prevent illness and to renew energy and vitality once an acute illness has passed. Ginseng is a herb that is aadaptogenic, which means it strengthens body functions and the immune system to help people adapt to physical stress. Note: ginseng is best avoided by those with high blood pressure. What herbs should I use to fight off a viral infection? Some excellent herbs for this are oil of oregano, olive leaf extract, Echinacea, Goldenseal and Neem leaf. What herbs are good for balancing a woman’s hormones? The best herbs for this are dong quai, black cohosh root, red raspberry leaves and chaste tree (also known as vitex). Some of these will have contradindications for pregnancy or nursing. Are there herbs that help men’s hormones? There are a number of herbs that are good for male hormones. Maca (known to enhance sexuality and fertility in both sexes) is a good to use on a regular basis. Also consider Tongkat Ali (eurycoma longifolia) a natural testosterone enhancer), or Epimedium (als known as Horny Goat Weed) an herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to enhance sexual performance by boosting energy levels. How long do I have to take herbs to deal with a chronic condition? This will depend on how long you have had the chronic condition. In general, you should give it at least a full month before you notice any difference. But that doesn’t mean you should stop taking the product. It has to do with the condition. If it is a hormonal issue, you may need to use the product on an ongoing basis. Some chronic cases may take a while to resolve, particularly if there are other health issues. Initially, a person would need to take herbs more often to treat a chronic condition, then less as the condition improves. Seeking the advice and care of a health care practitioner or herbalist would be prudent.
